In the early 1950's, the Pleasanton Public Library began as a single bookshelf housed in Earl's Bakery. The local Lion's Club donated not only the one shelf, but also the initial stock of books. The Chamber of Commerce accepted the operation of it in 1953 or 1954, with Nora Brite acting as librarian.
With the
formation
of the Friends of the Pleasanton Library
in 1970, the Chamber
turned
it over to that organization. Soon, in light of the popularity of
the Library, the city began funding it as a city department and the
Library
was housed in City Hall. It was quickly decided that the Library
needed a permanent home of its own. Anna Mae Watts, who
came
on board in 1969, served as librarian through the years of fund raisers
and grant writing. Many individuals and businesses were
instrumental
in the raising funds
for the building committee, especially Faye
Peeler, Library Board Chair and Travis Hall, Mayor. Corporate
grants
were received from Sid W. Richardson Foundation, Garvey Texas
Foundation,
Inc. and Ewing Hasell Foundation.
The grand opening for the current location was held on March 15, 1979 and the collection and staff have continued to grow.
The Library's present facility, a 4,200 square foot brick veneer structure, currently contains a collection of over 25,000 materials, including large print books, videos and books on tapes, along with 96 magazine subscriptions. As an accredited member of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, Texas Library Association and Alamo Area Library System, the library is able to offer its patrons interlibrary loan materials from various national lending libraries, along with many others. An on-line library catalog is available, as well as Internet access for the public.
An active Friends of the Library organization helps support the library through advocacy and fund raising events and is open to anyone who would like to join.
